THOMAS EAKINS/ painter/ photographer

Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (July 25, 1844 – June 25, 1916) has been celebrated by American art historians as "the strongest, most profound realist in nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century American art". (Wikipedia) But much to the horror of some of his purist contemporaries, he often worked from photographs that he took himself. As a teacher, he was also controversial in his use of both genders of nude models in mixed gender classes. The first photo is Eakins himself (not necessarily taken by him) and the rest are subject studies taken by him.
